The Laethes Mask is based on a beautiful 16th century visor at The Wallace Collection. With its dragon-like wing and eye motifs, it bears striking resemblance to the famous Negroli "batwing armor" that my Laethes design is based upon. Though not by the same artist (the maker of this visor is unknown), this piece is clearly inspired by the same mythology, so I figured why not treat them as a match for my own "garniture?"

Our Maille design is based on European 4-in-1 riveted mail (colloquially, chainmail), a military staple from the Iron and Middle Ages all through the 16th century. Before it was supplanted by plate, mail was synonymous with armor. For centuries it was incredibly valuable, expensive and time-consuming to produce—oftentimes the easiest way to acquire it was to pry it off someone else. Good thing you don't have to loot this piece off a dead body to get your hands on it. ;)

Our Maximilan mask is based on the eponymous style of armor popular in early 16th century Germany (which was, in turn, named for the Emperor Maximilian I), focusing on the bellows type of visor most commonly associated with this style.

Our Sackville design is based on the field garniture of Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset. A beautiful armor currently part of The Wallace Collection, it bears significant resemblance to the armor of Sir James Scudamore but for its blued steel: both armors were crafted in the Greenwich Royal Armories under the supervision of master armorer Jacob Halder.
Thomas Sackville himself was a man of somewhat questionable politics: he was a great advocate of "sumptuary laws," which is to say laws that only permitted fancy people to wear fancy things (for example, he dictated that only soldiers holding the rank of colonel or above should be permitted to wear silk and velvet). I get a special kick out of adapting his armor for all of us plebeians. ;)

Our Scudamore design is based on the field armor of Sir James Scudamore, currently on view at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Sir James was a prominent Elizabethan soldier, courtier, and enthusiastic jouster; he was praised in Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene (published 1596) as an example of chivalry personified. Channel knightly nobility in our take on this gorgeous armor!

Our Henry VIII is based on the field armor of the notorious king of England, a piece currently on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. This intricately designed suit was crafted for the king late in his life (what I like to call his “fat Elvis” period), which he wore into battle during his last military campaign despite his infirmities at the time. But you can get all of the artistry without any of the gout in our take on this beautiful armor. 😉

Historically, the dragon was the symbol of imperial power in ancient China. The emperor, as well as his high-ranking officials, often wore robes decorated with the serpentine creatures. But not all dragons are created equal: specifically, dragons with five claws were only to be worn by the Emperor, Son of Heaven, himself, while four claws denoted lower nobility. May the imperial dragons twisting their way through this design imbue you with the same prosperity!

Our Maille print is based on European 4-in-1 riveted mail (colloquially, chainmail), a military staple from the Iron and Middle Ages all through the 16th century. Look closely and you'll notice that the design contains slightly off-color "maker's rings." In the Middle Ages a smith might weave a stamped ring with his insignia into a piece as a sort of signature on his work. These rings were often made of bronze or brass to differentiate from the steel links. Proudly wear your original Lorica maille wherever you go!
